2019 Season
The offense for this roster took several attempts, but it was designed to be simple and QB friendly. The majority of the pass plays were rollouts and screens. It was in our best interest to get the ball out of the QBs hands in under 3 seconds and get the ball to the strength of the roster, the receivers. When we did run the ball, it consisted of Inside Zone, Counter Trey, and Jet Sweep.
Simple
I didn't want to overload the team with a list of plays and formations, so I went with 3 formations and 15 plays from those formations. I used a wristband system to quickly get playcalls in to the QB. I wanted to avoid excessive lingo, so playcalls were more like directions.
"Spread King" = Shotgun 2 x 2 with the Running Back to the right of the QB. Queen to the left.
"H-Shift" = The slot to the left would motion across the formation into the spot of the #3 receiver in Trips.
"Y-Corner" = The slot to the right (#2 receiver) would run a Corner route breaking at 10 yards. This also tells the Z receiver (#1 receiver) that he has a decoy route, which would be a Spot route (Slant & Sit). In other cases, the decoy route would be to run off a Safety.
Anytime the offensive line heard one receiver was to shift and another receiver was tagged with a route, they were to reach block to the direction of the motion, with the Running Back helping to seal the edge. This also told the backside receiver to run a Curl route.
QB-Friendly
Cutting the field in half would bring more success than full field progressions for this roster. Now the QB needed to focus on 3 defenders instead of 7.
The playcalls also served as directions for the QB. He knew who to motion and who his first read should be based on the call. So, on all rollouts, his progression would be from the receiver with the tagged route, to the receiver tagged with the motion.
