Varsity Intrasquad Scrimmages

2020 Season

Due to Covid-19, we were unable to participate in scheduled games. Fortunately, we were able to hold scrimmages. The roster would be evenly split into two units, where coaches were responsible for one of the two units. I had to opportunity to call the offensive plays in each scrimmage, and the defense for the last one.

I would get my roster the morning of the scrimmage date and would gameplan based on my personnel. I installed plays that would match the strengths of my roster, such as Inside Zone Read, Orbit RPOs, and dropback passing concepts that would match up well against a 4-3 defense.

The plays were drawn on scout cards, so no formal meetings or install took place.

Wing Left X-Orbit Fake IZ Read Slot Fade

  • 12 personnel with an Orbit motion from the X receiver

  • I found this play-action useful after the defense has seen both Orbit and Read Option several times

  • QB sold the fake; the defense responded, which gave open field for the Slot Fade

Tight Right Z-Orbit IZ

  • 11 personnel with an Orbit motion from the Z receiver

  • OL will block for Inside Zone

  • Simple RPO for the QB. If the defense respects the Orbit motion, hand the ball off. If the defense does not respect the Orbit motion, throw the Swing.

  • In this case, the defense did not adjust to the Orbit motion, which gave the offense a numbers advantage to the boundary.

Tight Right Z-Shift Fake IZ X-Flash

  • 11 personnel with a motion to Trips

  • Flash Fake from the QB

  • Playside OL will join on the X screen

Tight Right Z-Orbit All Go

  • 11 personnel with an Orbit motion from the Z receiver

  • Vertical routes from the receiver side

  • A pump fake by the QB can manipulate an aggressive secondary, especially if the Swing has been thrown several times.

  • In this case, the playside safety played a little too aggressive, leaving room over the top.

Tight Right Z-Drive

  • 11 personnel with a motion from the Z receiver

  • Z: Drag | H: Corner | Y: Stick | X: Fade

  • The Drag and Corner makes this a good call vs Man and Zone.

Tight Left X-Shift Fade + Post

  • Z: Fade | F: Wheel | Y: Post | X: Out

  • A Fade + Post combo to the field puts a lot of pressure on the field side Safety. Both Safeties remained on the hash, which left no help over the top for the Z-Fade

  • Vs Man, this call is covered well, with the exception of the F-Wheel to the boundary. This call would be more ideal vs Cover 2

Tight Right X-Dig

  • X: Dig | Y: Whip | H: Out | Z: Fade

  • Dropback concept is ideal vs Man

Trips RB Swing

  • 11 personnel with a motion to Trips

  • Solid call for an early down or short distance

  • Could be difficult to hook the end but should find success with solid perimeter blocking

WideWide - Clip 022.mp4

Tight Right Z-Orbit F-Screen

  • 11 personnel with an Orbit motion from the Z receiver

  • Delay blocks from the TE and right side of the OL

  • This call was not very effective against a squat Corner. It is likely to be a better outcome vs Man.
